5 Awesome Keyboard Shortcuts that Nobody Knows About

b2ap3_thumbnail_scuts400.jpgThe computer mouse is a great tool that has made our operating system navigation much easier. However, our dependence on the computer mouse has naturally led to an independence from its counterpart, the keyboard (aside from everyday word processing). Here are a few awesome functional keyboard shortcuts that everyone has forgotten about.

1. [Alt] + [Tab] - Switch between Open Programs
Upon pressing both of these keys, a menu will pop up on your screen with icons of all of your currently open programs. Hold down the [Alt] key and navigate through your programs using [Tab]. When you release [Alt], that program will come to the front.

2. [Windows] + [L] - System Lock
A few times throughout the workday, you will need to step away from your computer for a few minutes. Don't leave your system open to computer pranks from your coworkers. Pressing [Windows] + [L] will quickly lock your system and keep your officemates out. Your programs will still be running in the background, and your password will be required to get past the lock and access your system.

3. [Shift] + [Delete] - Permanently Delete Files
The default method of deleting unwanted files is moving them to your computer's recycle bin. Your recycle bin can easily get bogged down by neglecting to permanently delete files from it. However, you can cut out the middle man and permanently delete unwanted files from your system by selecting the file and pressing [Shift] + [Delete]. A menu will pop up asking if you're sure you want to delete the file. Press [Enter] to confirm.

4. [Windows] + [D] - Show Desktop
Many times, you'll be working on a project within a program and need to access or save files on your desktop. Instead of picking up your mouse, you can simply press [Windows] + [D] to instantly minimize all windows to give you access to your desktop. When you're done, pressing these keys again will bring up all open windows, allowing you to pick up where you left off.

5. [Windows] + [Shift] + up arrow - Maximize Window
Pressing these keys will maximize your current window to fit your computer screen. Conversely, pressing [Windows] + [Shift] + down arrow will restore your window to its original size.

There are obviously many more keyboard shortcuts that could be used for everyday office use, these five are just the most common ones.
